Clarity Canine & Equine, LLC

Kim is the artist in the family.  Her primary focus is commissioned pet portraits because she loves to hear about the special relationships people develop with their pets, and then to create a lasting likeness of each animal that captures its personality.

She understands the unique and powerful connections that can develop between humans and animals.  Her artwork is a creative expression of these loving relationships.

For now her art “business,” like her horse training, is an entrepreneurial hobby.  She funds these hobbies through her full-time work as Assistant Vice-President for Advancement at Trident Technical College, where she leads the effort to raise funds to support local students in the pursuit of their educational goals.

The first four drawings below are all of Kim's favorite subject, her beloved Shoki.  You can read Shoki's story on the Horse Training page.
The following is a portrait of Kim's first horse, Lillith, otherwise called "Lilli Bell."  Lilli, a thoroughbred mare, was a surprise present from Van on Kim's 30th birthday.  She was much loved and she is muched missed now that she is gone.
The portrait below is of Van's mare, Puck.  She is named after the prankster hobgoblin, Puck, from Shakespeare's play "A Midsummer Night's Dream."  The name suits her!
The next two portraits are of Van and Kim's two dogs, Sandy and Crab.  Sandy thinks she was put on this earth to love Van.  Crab thinks he was put here to love EVERYONE.  Both are featured on the Dog Training page.  Sandy was born Thanksgiving Day, 2001.  She is half Labrador, half Golden Retreiver, and all sweetheart.  Crab was born on April Fool's Day, 2000.  There is no telling what breed he is.  Van call's him "a walking Rorschach Inkblot Test" because everybody who sees him sees something different.  Crab was named for a dog that is featured in Shakespeare's play "Two Gentlemen of Verona."  As it happens, Crab auditioned for and won the part of playing himself in a College of Charleston production of that play in 2003!
The next two portraits are of Dahlia, "Princess' Black Dahlia," a registered 2000 TWH mare and her half-brother, Chip, "Chocolate Chipawa," a registered 1998 TWH gelding.  They share the same dam, "Princess' Lady Love."  The pair belong to our dear friends, Robin and Hardy Brown, owners of the best boarding facility around, Chainey Briar Stables.  Of the two portraits, Robin says, "Kim has a unique way of capturing the personality of a horse through his eyes.  Not every artist is able to do this.  In this drawing, you get a feel for the peacefullness that exists in their surroundings as well.  The colors are just beautiful!"
The next two portraits are of pets belonging to our dear friends Heather and Tony Bertauski and their children, Ben and Maddy.  Tony and Heather, owners of EarthScape Designs, LLC, designed the garden around our dog kennels.

The first portrait features their dogs, Kooper and Kia.  Heather says, "Kim asked our family lots of questions about the dogs (and Blackjack) so she could incorporate our perceptions of the dogs into the portrait.  Kim sent us updates of her work as it progressed, again, asking us if she was capturing their personalities and unique characteristics. We had so much input into the portraits, which made them even more special to us."

The second portrait features Heather's horse, Blackjack, a six year-old Quarter Horse gelding.  Heather believes that she and Blackjack "were meant to find each other and to learn together."  Kim's drawing, she says, "captures his soft eyes and inquisitive nature."
"Yoshi"
9x12 pencil portrait
The following is a portrait of Yoshi, "Royal Beat," a registered 1993 TB gelding belonging to Melissa Phillips.  Of the portrait, Melissa says, "I personally think his portrait is awesome because you captured him through the eyes and expression."
